Dear La Cocinita:

It was with great satisfaction that I finally saw Dan Schuster's name in the November "Around Albuquerque" column. This greengrocer offers the best produce in Albuquerque. His talent for choosing the best produce as well as his long-term knowledge and dedication to fruits and vegetables are the biggest asset that La MontaƱita Co-op (both of them, even though he is the produce department leader for the North Valley store) has to offer this community. His reputation encompasses a broad spectrum ... from the friendly produce guy who will share his favorite way to prepare kale with an Irish brogue, the guy who gives my kids free bananas or Captain Strawberry, his creative alter-ego that both entertains and bewilders the bored shopper. He is a gem who was long overdue the brief and passing recognition he received in your column. Ask any of his regular shoppers or his staff. They will share my enthusiasm for this true local hero. You should do a story on him in La Cocinita or at least have him as an ongoing expert in the land of fruit and vegetables! Oh yeah, it was nice to see Joe Schuster recognized as well.

Dear La Cocinita:

I read [Deborah Hoffman's] article about Charles Krause and his Tucumcari Mountain Cheese Factory. [The author] finished off the article by saying [she] bought Krause's feta crumbles at Albertson's in Albuquerque. I tried to find his cheese at two Albertson's stores: one at Candelaria and Eubank and one at San Mateo and Montgomery. The cheese folks there had never heard of Ithaki cheese from Tucumcari. Which Albertson's carries his cheese? We would like to try it.

Deborah Hoffman replies: Sorry about the mix-up, Merrie. Actually, the folks at Tucumcari Mountain tell me that it will be a few more weeks until their cheese is available at all local Albertson's stores. Look for it in the gourmet cheese section.
